History of the Oil and Gas Industry in Brunei Darussalam

The Oil and Gas Industry is one of the most important industrial sectors to contribute to the economy of Brunei Darussalam. This industry continues to play a dominant role even in the present day where the country has attempted to diversify its economy through other industrial sectors.

Brunei Darussalam's history of oil and gas started at the end of the 19 th century but it was not till 1929 where the first commercial oilfield was discovered in Seria. Commercial production of oil started in the year 1932 but the Seria Oil Field was only fully utilised after the end of the Second World War.
 
Milestones of the oil and gas industry in Brunei :
   
1899: The Ayer Berkunchi oil well, next to Kampong Ayer, was the first well to be dug
   
1929: The first commercial oil field was discovered in Seria by the British Malayan Petroleum Company
   
1932: Brunei started exporting oil for the first time
   
1963: The first offshore oilfield, South West Ampa, was discovered
   
1972: The first cargo shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas was sent to Japan
   
1983: The Seria Crude Oil Refinery started operations
   
1993: The Brunei Oil and Gas Authority (BOGA) was formed
   
1994: The Renewal of the Liquefied Natural Gas Sales Contract with Japan
   
1994: First Liquefied Natural Gas export to Korea
   
2001: The formation of the Brunei National Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd (PetroleumBRUNEI)
   
2001: The opening up of new offshore blocks J and K within the Brunei Darussalam Exclusive Economic Zone (10,000 sq. km. total area)
   
2003: The Signing of the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) between PetroleumBRUNEI and the Total/Amerada Hess/BHP Billiton Consortium for Block J
   
2004: The 75 th anniversary of the Oil and Gas Industry in Brunei Darussalam
   
2005: The launching of the onshore blocks of L and M designated to PetroleumBRUNEI (5,200 sq. km. total area)
   
2005: The formation of the Minister of Energy Portfolio at the Prime Minister's Office
   
2005: The signing of the Joint Venture Agreement between the Brunei Darussalam Methanol Project Consortium (Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals Company, Inc., PetroleumBRUNEI and ITOCHU Corporation)
